Easy Candy Cane Vase Centerpiece

Confession time: I am a hoarder. I keep candy canes for Christmas decorating. They will last for years with the plastic on them, if you store them in a ziptop bag away from heat and humidity.

I used a favorite ‘vase-within-a-vase’ method to create the candy cane flower arrangement as a centerpiece for Christmas. Start with two vases, a smaller one to nest inside a larger one (round vases work too, they don’t have to be square). Place your flowers in the inner vase and fill the walls between the vases with your decorative material to conceal the flower stems. I use candy canes and peppermint candies to fill the vase walls.

How many candy canes you need will depend on the size of your vase. Since my outer vase height was taller than the length of the candy canes, I filled the space at the bottom with peppermint candies. Fill your inner vase with water and then add you’re ready to add your flowers.

To add some interest to the arrangement, I used some florist picks to wire a few pine cones to some candy canes. Candy canes were attached with florist wire to red ornament picks from my Christmas stash, to tuck in among the flowers.

For flowers, I used a $4 bunch of alstroemeria from the grocery store. Alstroemeria is my ‘go-to’ flower since they are available year round in a variety of colors, are affordable and long-lasting, up to two weeks.

In addition to alstroemeria, I added some evergreens, free-for-the-clipping, Leyland cypress from the yard. Red sparkly branch picks that I’ve used in our Christmas tree over the years add a little color and height.
