How to Clean Fake Plants Like a Pro Using Tension Rods

If you're anything like me, you love the look of greenery around your home but without all the maintenance that comes with real plants.
That's why faux plants are perfect! However, even fake plants need a little TLC now and then. Dust, grime, and household dirt can dull their beauty over time. So today, I’m going to show you my favorite way to clean artificial plants using tension rods!
This method is super easy, effective, and best of all—it doesn’t require any special equipment. Let's jump right in!
Tools and Materials:
- Tension rods (or any other poles that can stretch across a bath)
- Removable putty or double-sided tape (optional but helpful for stabilizing the rods)
- Spray bottle
- Dish Soap

1. Prep Your Space
Before we start, let's set the stage! Head to your bathroom because we’re going to clean these plants over the bath—this keeps the mess contained and makes rinsing a breeze.
2. Set Up Your Tension Rods
In my opinion, the best way to clean fake plants is to suspend them over your bathtub.
I like to use tension rods for this job. You could also use a bath tray or any type of pole that fits across your bath.
We’re basically creating a little platform to hold the plants in place so we can easily spray and rinse them.
To start, place two or more tension rods across the top of your bathtub.
Secure them with double-sided tape or removable putty to prevent them from slipping—this step is optional but can really help!
Make sure the rods are spaced out enough to support the base or stems of your plants without them falling through.
3. Arrange the Plants
Carefully balance your artificial plants across the tension rods. You’ll want to make sure they’re stable enough that you can spray them down without them tipping over.
4. Spray with Water and Dish Soap
In a spray bottle, mix water and Dawn dish soap. This combination works wonders for cutting through the dust and grime without damaging your plants.
You don’t need anything fancy—just Dawn dish soap and water is perfect for the job!
5. Rinse the Plants
Once the plants are nicely coated with your soapy mixture, grab your handheld showerhead (or a watering can if that’s what you have) and give the plants a good rinse.
Make sure you’re getting all the soap off.
Rinse them until the water runs clear and there’s no more soapy residue left. You’ll be amazed at how much fresher and cleaner they look already!
6. Let the Plants Drip Dry
Now, just let the plants drip dry. Leave them balanced on the tension rods, over the tub, and allow any excess water to run off.
Depending on the size and material of the plants, this may take anywhere from an hour to a few hours.

I use the same basic method, only I do it outside on the porch. They dry faster and aren't in my way.
