A customer of mine had a trash compactor that no longer worked. I suggested removing It and using the space for trash cans. I designed a lattice door with inexpensive material from Menards. Initially I installed it with hinges. We then decided to install a double trash can unit that slides out like a drawer. I removed the hinges and fastened the door to the unit. The result is much more attractive than the old compactor. I have made two of the lattice doors. Now my wife wants one to replace the compactor we don’t use. Its In the “Honey Do List”.
First one - I used 1” x 2”s to make a frame and 1/2” x 2”s for the lattice. 2 hinges and a small magnet to keep the door closed. Very inexpensive material.
Second one - I used the same material for the frame but a thiner plastic lattice material for the rest. Also used self closing hinges.
Removed the hinges and fastened the door to the trash can unit.
Added a handle to match the kitchen cabinets.
A lattice door is a nice alternative to a compactor or replacement of an ordinary cabinet door.

I love this idea. Do you think I can do something similar to hide a filing cabinet under my home workspace?
