Not good! I think I'd consider replacing the door.Is there a current moisture problem in the bathroom?

How long have you had this "new" door? I would take it down and return it! New doors shouldn't grow mushroom like mold!

Perhaps with an anti-fungal treatment, but being a laminated door, getting it wet with treatment may damage it. Laminate is usually applied over a particle board that expands when wet, then falls apart.

Pesticide isn't what you'd need. You may have to replace the door. Sorry.

You're welcome. Sometimes you can find used doors much cheaper, although I'd look for a paneled door, or one that's made of real wood.

Mold is toxic, but try to bleach out the mold, if that does not work, you can sand it then put primer o it that says mold resistant and repaint again.

@RABS----I suspect that if you are still in India--as your post reads--that you might have some fungus that grows there that we might not have here in a less hot and humid climate. Is this a SOLID WOOD DOOR? Or one made like a layered piece with a nicer "face" and a hollow or "solid" inner layer? Look on the edges and see if it looks like all one piece thruout or if there are different colored edges where the face meets the side---if there IS then this is a "Filled" or "Solid core" door and anything could be in there. Some have strips of heavy duty cardboard in a zig-zag between the outer faces so the outer "skin" doesn't buckle--this would leave a LOT of room for something to get in there and grow. Do you know where the carpenter got the door? Maybe the local hardware store can help figure out what is in there. The carpenter might have had this sitting around and decided to sell it to you and then disappear--happens all the time sadly.

You may want to consider taking it down and let it dry-out thoroughly. Then buy a clear sealant paint on a couple of coats, then let dry. afterward, I'd apply a primer thats mold resistant and then finish it with a paint of your choice...or buy a new door..lol

@rabs not sure about the issues with wood in your country, but what you are describing is definitely sounding like a fungus. Perhaps you could consult with a wood specialist - either a cabinet maker or such to find out what to do. If you are replacing the door you should find a reputable dealer who has been around for while. Hope you find a solution to your problem.

I'm sure this was not a common occurrence and that you can find another without this problem. You've probably also learned the signs leading to this problem as well.

A fungus thrives in dark moist area's and mushrooms send out spores. some types of mushrooms only grow on wood, so it makes since to dry the wood, But to prevent it from returning you would have to find where your having moisture issues, and it doesn't take much moisture to keep this problem going. There is a product called Borate which is environmentally Friendly but deadly to wood-eating fungi and insects. when fungi find a place they like they'll continue to return as long as the place is favorable; so its important to find the moisture problem and keep it from returning. I would suggest that a dehumidifier would possibly help since it's a bathroom door; though, you may find that replacing the door with possibly a metal door would work too. best of luck to you!

I would be interested in hearing how things turn-out after using the borate. I didn't mean to insult you in any way. I have no way of seeing your house so I only tried to reply to the conditions that a fungus will thrive in. Here in the states there are many options and styles of metal doors,so it was a option I thought you would consider, I hope the borate will work and put an end to your problem so that you can enjoy your home.
