I want to make my wallpaper shine, can I put shellac on it?

My wallpaper is dull looking to me and I would like put a shine on it . Can I use a clear shellac to achieve this or what can I use?

How much wallpaper do you have to do? Anything that would be painted onto it with a brush or roller might cause it to bubble, or start coming loose. I think the best option would be to spray it with thin coats of whatever you choose to give it a shine.

I would test some left over paper on a board and spray with high gloss poly and see what it does

Depends on whether it is vinyl or paper. ?? Was the original finish flat or shiny? If flat and paper try some poly, if vinyl wipe down with Murphy's Oil cleaner and see if it brings the luster back.

If you don't need the whole thing to be shiny, just take some gold paint and a tiny paint brush and highlight the fruit and leaves where the light 'hits' them.

Pamela ... I would test a small area (behind the fridge) if there is paper there. I have used a product in the past made by Coronado Paints called 'aqua plastic' it is a water base urethane. Low VOC, soap and water cleanup. It comes in different sheens so you can choose your shine. If your seams are popping or seperating, make you sure you glue them down with seam glue and a roller (both found at hardware store) ...Good Luck!

If you LOVE the paper and know it's a keeper, then go for it ...but doing a test patch is a good idea :)

I would not use shellac as it yellows over time.   If you want more shine, spray on poly would probably be the best option. However snything that is put on over the wallpaper could cause problems when you want to remove the wallpaper.

Try using ModPodge, but remember it will make it a little more difficult to remove when the time comes.

Another vote for Modpodge, since it is technically a glue, removal eventually will be a bit tougher.

The best suggestion is to use ModPodge. It is available in different sheens and you can select the shiny. You can apply it with one of those sponge brushes so you won't need to cover all of the areas as you would with a spray product.
